Thrombophlebitis is a potentially serious vascular condition characterized by inflammation of the venous wall accompanied by the formation of one or more blood clots (thrombi) within the affected vein. These clots can narrow or completely obstruct the vessel lumen, impairing the normal return of blood to the heart.

The condition may occur in superficial veins (superficial thrombophlebitis); however, its most serious and potentially life-threatening form develops when it affects the deep venous system of the lower extremities. This condition, known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), requires prompt medical evaluation and treatment, as a clot may detach, travel through the bloodstream, and cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening complication.

• Local Inflammation (Redness and Warmth)

The skin overlying the affected vein may become visibly red, warm to the touch, and highly sensitive to pressure.

• Swelling (Edema)

Noticeable swelling of the foot, ankle, or entire calf, usually affecting only one leg (unilateral edema).

• Palpable Vein Hardening

The affected vein may feel like a firm, tender cord beneath the skin due to clot formation within the vessel.
